Bangladesh police are appointed police personnel in various positions in two ways. One is promotion and another is direct recruitment. Among the total posts of ASPs, two-thirds are taken directly and the rest of the posts are filled up through the promotion of the inspectors. Normally, 50% of sub-inspectors post is filled up through promotion and the rest of the 50% of the post are filled up through direct recruitment. Sergeant and constable are directly joined in the department. In Bangladesh, Bangladesh police directly recruit police personnel in four tires such as-
1. Assistant superintendent of police (ASP)
2. Sub-inspector (SI)
3. Sargent
4. Constable
Job Criteria:
Any male or female whose nationality is Bangladeshi can apply for any of those four ranks, after filling all requirement of the specific post. The whole recruitment process is separated into the following three steps.
First Step: Publish the circular of recruitment and take the application form of the competent applicant.
Second Step: Various tests of relevant skills.
Third Step: Select and appointing a suitable post.
Publish The Circular of Recruitment and Take Application Form of Competent Applicant (Step 1)
BP (Bangladesh police) department does not publish any circular for the highest entry-level (Assistant Superintendent of Police). The new employees of ASP post are also not selected by BP (Bangladesh police) department themselves. The recruitment circular for ASP is published by BPSC (Bangladesh Public Service Commission). BPSC publishes those circular in the national daily newspaper and also on their website. BP only publishes circular for other posts include sub-inspector, Sargent, and constable. Those circular are publishing in also national newspaper and Bangladesh police website.
1.1 Requirement for Application
Bangladesh police require different types of requirements for each position. Following are the basic requirement of police recruitment.
1. Residential requirement
2. Educational qualification
3. Age limitation
4. Physical requirement (Height, weight)
1.1.1 Requirement for ASP:
The assistant superintendent of police is the highest level of entry in the Bangladesh police. This is a superior post that deals with the line officer and planning of the action of the police. Bangladesh police require post-graduation or 4-year length or equivalent degree for ASP recruitment. Age and height are varying with gender and quota policy. Weight will be proportionate with the height (According to Body Mass Index). The following is the table of height and age requirement.

1.1.2 Requirement of SI (Sub-Inspector):
The sub-inspector is the non-cadre mid-level entry position of Bangladesh police. They are vital for maintaining criminal law and order in the country. They are competent for the field level operation, combining both to uphold justice and server the public. The direct recruitment procedure of sub-inspector is conducted by police headquarter. Graduation or equivalent degree is the educational requirement of this position. Age and height are varying with gender and quota policy as like as ASP post. Weight will be proportionate with height (According to Body Mass Index). Following is the table of height and age requirement.

There is another requirement for SI (sub-inspector) is marital status. Involved candidates will have to be unmarried (not Divorced) & unmarried till finish training time.
1.1.3 Requirement for Sergeant:
The sergeant is also a mid-level entry position of Bangladesh police as sub-inspector. The sergeant is enforcers of traffic law and is cardinal to maintaining traffic order in the country. They are dedicated to serving the public by keeping the transportation system safe. Bangladesh police department is only requiring male for this position, the female has no opportunity to apply for this position. Graduation or equivalent degree is the educational requirement of this position. Age and height are varying with quota policy. Weight will be proportionate with height (According to Body Mass Index).

Various Test of Relevant Skill (Step 2):
The recruitment authority takes a series of test in the recruitment process. Those test can be divided into several parts, such as,
- Physical agility test
- Written test
- Oral Interview
- Police verification
- Medical test
1.2.1 Physical Agility Test:
ASP candidate has no physical agility test, they started testing the process with a written test. Physical agility test is mandatory for SI, sergeant, and constable post. This is the first test of the police recruitment process for that position. It is taken as an elimination process. Candidate of police is screening out by the physical agility test. The physical agility test includes the following pattern.
- Height and weight measurement
- Physical disability check
- Rope climbing
- Run
- Long-jump
1.2.2 Written Test: The Written test is the first testing stage of the APS recruitment process and second for SI, sergeant, and constable. And it is also held with different syllabus for a different position.
1.2.2.1 Written Test for ASP: Candidate of ASP go through a series of written test. At first, a 200 marks preliminary test is taken. A preliminary test is a multiple-choice exam. This test includes Bangla, English, international affairs, Bangladesh affairs, general science, general knowledge, computer and technology, mental ability, and ethics. This test is taken as an elimination test. BPSC eliminate a major number of the candidate by this test. The rest of the candidates are chosen for the comprehensive written test. The following table is shown in the syllabus of this test.

1.2.2.2 Written Test for SI, Sergeant: After passing in the physical test, SI, sergeant, candidate participate in a written test. The following tables are the syllabus and marks of those written tests.

1.2.3 Oral Interview: After passing in written test chosen candidates are called for an oral interview. It is taken by an interview board. The board composed of a university professor, a member of BPSC, a high official of the police department, and a psychologist. The oral interview helps to identify personal motivation to the police department, their ethical state, and general knowledge.

1.2.4 Police Verification: Police verification is the last resort to select new police personnel. After all the physical, written, and oral interview a candidate is verified by police. A police officer verifies the candidate ‘s personal information such as an address, father name, mother name, and also verifies the character, relation with neighbor etc. after a police verification, a candidate finally selected as police personnel.
1.2.5 Medical Examination: A medical examination is done when a candidate successfully completed his or her police verification. Medical examination composed of the various medical test includes the blood test, HIV test, hepatitis B test, other physical tests.
Select and Appointing Suitable Post Step 3:
After completion of all those above procedures (from application to medical examination) police personnel are finally selected. Normally, ASP appointed by the people republic of Bangladesh. On the other hand, rest 3 posts appointed by the superintendent of police. The new police officer started their career with a training period. ASP started with a 1-year basic training and 6 months, field attachment. But, SI started with a 1-year basic training and 1-year field attachment and Sergeant started with 6 months of basic training and a 6-months field attachment.
